# Technology

Modbus TCP/IP is a variant of the Modbus family of simple, vendor-neutral communication protocols intended for supervision and control of automation equipment. Specifically, it covers the use of Modbus messaging in an environment using the TCP/IP protocols. Here, MODBUS can be defined as an application layer messaging protocol, positioned at level 7 of the OSI model, which provides client/server communication between devices connected on different types of buses or networks.

The most common use of this protocol in industry is to connect industrial devices such as Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), I/O modules, and gateways to other simple field buses or I/O networks.
